Cyber Patrol http://www.cyberpatrol.com/ I like the fact that Cyber Patrol provides a list of categorized web sites so parents can determine which sites are suitable for children. I found this site to be a great help in allowing parents/teachers to control whether individual web sites should be allowed. The program can filter web pages, chat rooms, and can be used to limit online time as well.
FirstGov for Kids http://www.kids.gov/ This site is designed for children in the K-8 group. This site provides a directory to links of government-related kids sites. They are grouped by subject and it also links to other kids' sites from other organization. Although I found it kid friendly it was not my favorite site to gather information about our government. It seemed to lack the design appeal I think it needs to draw and keep the attention of the children in this age group.
KidsClick! http://www.kidsclick.org/ Gotta love it...backed by librarians! KidsClick lists about 5,000 web sites in various categories. Very easy to navigate and kid friendly. Attractive design and I loved all the search options: Keyword, Category, Dewey Decimal, Digital Media and Alphabetical search options.
Activity #2: Fruits and Vegetables without the quotation marks gave me 3,204.000 hits. "Fruits and Vegetables" gave me 1,290.000 hits. That is an amazing difference of 1,914.000. Wow! Very impressive!
Activity #3: This was my first time using the search engine Boolify. It was a lot of fun and when my daughter saw me playing around with the puzzle pieces she commented, "Daddy you are suppose to be doing school work, not playing on the computer."
a. I searched google with the terms religion NOT christian population and received an interesting comment that the United States Census asked no questions about religion preference so it was unable to give viable numbers. It was however able to give me answers for several other countries.
b. I went to http://boolify.org and discovered the wonderful puzzle pieces. In the pieces I typed the same search basically as I did with google and received basically the same findings. I liked this feature.
c. When I have patrons come into the library and I am trying to assist them with searches I believe using the boolify.org site will be of great assistance to me in explaining boolean operators.
Activity #4: I decided to search and see who is the owner of http://www.americangirl.com since it is a site that my daughter visits often. Activities #9 and #10: I shared the Google calculation tool with my daughter and now she is going to use it for her math. I, of course, said no. Her Mother said she would use it for checking Scotland's work. I shared the weather feature by phone with a friend of mine who travels over the country doing sales work. He said that would be a great tool for his travel plans.
Bonus Activity: This is the link to my Libraries Search Engine. I created this search engine to search the three public libraries that are in my driving range. This was quite a learning experience. I really had fun doing this and it was so simple. What a great activity to teach in a library class to Juniors and Seniors.
