There was a 9/11 remembrance ceremony outside the library today, bagpipes and prayers. Very nice service. I used Prezi for my presentation. I used the symbols of the great pyramids for my theory depiction. All great theories are built with a strong base and then additional information is staked on top of the original base. This gives the theory the strength to hold up the new ideas added to it. The three great pyramids of Egypt reflects that process to me.
Behaviorism, you give information and demand it returned. I am personally not a fan of behaviorism. Yet, it has its place and its situations. I however, am not a strong advocate of behaviorism. I have seen behaviorism destroy some fairly creative minds. Behaviorism always frowns on its own failures and then calls for more behaviorism. I never responded well to punishment nor strived to much just for the reward. I strive to learn, as life is in the learning we make our own.
Cognitivism speaks more toward the presentation of the material to the thinking student. Teaching toward the student's strengths. Presenting material through several different avenues. White boards, interactive processes, electronic media. Sparking interest in the student. Asking the question how can this material be of use to the student. Thinking through the process with why, more than it has to be this way. The beginning thinker.
My comfort zone is constructivism. Ever growing ever changing. Seeking the answer in collaboration with the student. The students becomes the teacher as a learner directing the dream. Realizing that the student can direct and assist in the learning process. The future is in information and the powerful tools that the World Wide Web has made available. Does the student have a hunger to look deeply into a subject? The information is at the students fingertips. The newest pyramid is heading for unchartered territory. The capstone has took off and is in search of the deeper meanings the more wonderous journeys.
There is more to life than a forty hour work week and retirement as a goal. There is living and experiencing and yes, risk taking. Life is to discover and look deeper into one's essentail self. I realize that there are students who travel at a slower speed and need more behaviorist supervision, but let's not hold back those who can and must move faster and to the beat of a different drum. Constructivism allows us to work more at the learners pace and we as teachers must be ready, willing, and able to assist and facilitate all of our students those who travel slow and those who fly like a rocket. Headed to universes we can not even fathom in our wildest dreams. Remember our greatest learners, philosphers, and even theorist refused to be held back by the status quo. They broke new ground, asked new questions, and did not look at the clock.
