1) What is contained in the site? This site is a five episode presentation of four college students (Jared, Allison, Nikki and Sanford) and their travails through college. The video is done in an illustrated cartoon style with voice over of the four main characters. It is a great presentation for college bound seniors in high school. Presented by Ryerson University's Academic Workshop. Ryerson University is located in Toronto, Canada. The focus of this video is the expectation of new students to develop Academic Integrity. The four main characters in the video confront the various situations that students will experience in their academic undertakings. Overwhelmed by the work load. Not enough rest. Not enough time management. The easy way out, etc. The video presentation is done in five parts with each part speaking directly toward different ways for a student to lose their academic integrity. Episode #1: Unintentional Plagiarism Episode #2: Buying or Borrowing Course Work Episode #3: Cheating on Tests and Exams Episode #4: Forging/Misrepresentation & Unauthorized Group Work Episode #5: Group Work.
2) How you would use this resource in a classroom? I would structure this presentation to my college bound seniors in the library, presenting one episode per week. After viewing the video there would be a general class discussion with a handout concerning the specific topic of each chapter. There would also be a quiz based on the terms used in the chapter. I would also want each student to write a paragraph describing the key violation of academic integrity in each episode. I would work to see that each student is informed and educated in the different areas of academic integrity.
3) How you would assess student learning based on their use of the site? At the end of the fifth episode I would ask the students to write a single page paper stating their own code of personal academic integrity. This would be followed up with a hand out presenting the importance of academic integrity and the link to this presentation if they would like to go to the workshop page and watch the presentation again. I will reiterate the need to understand the importance of avoiding plagiarism, and the negative results of plagiarism to their future academic endeavors. I would also have in this handout a link to Writecheck so the students can see the importance of knowing what to cite and how to avoid unintentional acts of plagiarism. I will evaluate the students work and assess which students may need to review the videos again assuring that all the students have a complete understanding of the necessity to develop academic integrity.
